US Department of Energy Sets 2028 Target for Useful Quantum Computers, Shortest Among Major National Plans

The US Department of Energy launched the Quantum Genesis initiative to deliver quantum computers capable of contributing to open problems in chemistry, materials science, plasma physics and high-energy physics by 2028. The initiative will run a competition and construct a national quantum supercomputing facility. It forms part of the larger Genesis Mission that supplies funding to researchers.
Darío Gil, under secretary for science at the DoE, said recent gains in qubit quality and error-correction algorithms support the timeline. He added that AI will assist in optimizing quantum control systems. Juliette Peyronnet of Alice & Bob called the 2028 goal ambitious but feasible.
Paul Stimers of the Quantum Industry Coalition noted that several firms have already announced plans to deliver error-corrected machines on or near that date. The announcement follows two executive orders on quantum technology signed by President Donald Trump and a $2 billion investment by the Department of Commerce in quantum computing companies.
Some technologies referenced in the orders, including quantum sensors, have reached commercial viability.
The US target is the shortest among comparable national programs. The UK plans large-scale systems beyond 2030 through its ProQure program, while China has placed quantum computing alongside artificial intelligence at the center of its next five-year strategy.
