Diplomatic consultations took place in Cairo involving Egypt, Somalia, Eritrea and a senior US envoy, Al Jazeera reported. Security in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea region formed the central agenda item. US President’s Senior Adviser for Africa Massad Boulos held separate meetings in Cairo with Somali and Eritrean officials.
Boulos posted on X that he discussed with Somalia’s foreign minister “important issues of security and stability in the Horn of Africa”, including ways to promote regional stability and Somalia’s domestic political dialogue. The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam dispute produced no new developments during the Cairo discussions, Al Jazeera reported. Sudan was not publicly involved.
The conflict in Sudan continues to shape the strategic environment along the Red Sea and Egypt’s southern frontier. The Horn of Africa and the Red Sea are increasingly viewed as a single strategic arena, according to Al Jazeera. The Cairo discussions did not mark the formation of a new regional bloc.
