US President Trump Criticizes NATO Amid Iran Conflict Tensions

A former ambassador to NATO noted a distinction between targeting specific countries and undermining the entire alliance.

The ambassador said that linking criticism to NATO in rhetoric could damage the organization, though it may not lead to formal steps to undercut it. If the US intended to weaken NATO, options could include remaining in the alliance on paper without filling key positions or delaying appointments and payments.

Another approach would involve not participating in a crisis or conducting limited troop withdrawals in regions like eastern Poland, where the US leads NATO's deterrence contingent.

The most direct option would be issuing a 180-day notice of full withdrawal from the Washington Treaty. However, US Congress imposed legislative limits requiring a two-thirds Senate majority to approve withdrawal.

The ambassador stated that significant members in the Republican Party recognize the benefits of NATO to the US.

A study from last year found that a majority of US respondents believed America benefited from alliance membership. Support for NATO among Republicans has fallen below 50 percent for the first time, according to the ambassador. The alliance's structure involves political constraints, military dependence, and mutual interests between the US and European members.

These factors bind the sides together, making a break unlikely in the near term. The campaign against Iran has heightened tensions, particularly over policing the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway affected by the conflict. NATO's endurance relies on ongoing cooperation, with the US providing substantial funding and leadership in defense efforts.
