The Vegas Golden Knights defeated the Carolina Hurricanes 5-4 in double overtime on Saturday night to take a 2-1 lead in the Stanley Cup Final. Shea Theodore scored the decisive goal when the puck deflected off Carolina goaltender Brandon Bussi’s skate. The goal came after Vegas had surrendered a four-goal lead in regulation.

Second-period outburst Mitch Marner scored three goals in a 6:10 span of the second period, the fastest hat trick in Cup Final history. Tomas Hertl also scored in the period, giving Vegas a 4-0 lead. Carolina replaced goaltender Frederik Andersen with Brandon Bussi to start the third period. Bussi stopped 18 shots.

Hurricanes rally Jordan Martinook, Taylor Hall and Jordan Staal scored 39 seconds apart in the third period. Andrei Svechnikov added a power-play goal with 1:42 remaining to force overtime. Vegas goaltender Carter Hart made 29 saves. Carolina outshot Vegas 33-25 overall.

The two clubs will next meet Tuesday in Las Vegas. Vegas defenseman Brayden McNabb returned after missing Game 2 with a facial injury. Carolina played without forward William Carrier, who suffered an upper-body injury in the second period.
