Vice President Vance Calls 2021 Remark One of the Dumbest Things He Ever Said
Vice President JD Vance wrote in his new book that a 2021 comment about childless cat ladies was a boneheaded remark. He said the statement distracted from his intended point about societal attitudes toward having children.
Fox NewsVice President JD Vance described a 2021 remark about childless cat ladies as one of the dumbest things he ever said in his new book Communion, according to NBC News. The comment originally appeared during a 2021 appearance on Tucker Carlson Tonight.
Vance said the country was run by childless cat ladies who were miserable at their own lives and wanted to make others miserable too. He named then-Vice President Kamala Harris, then-Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez as examples.
In the book, Vance wrote that the remark caused two firestorms and was intentionally provocative rather than illuminating. He said it had the added effect of distracting from his actual point that society is becoming pathologically hostile to having kids.
Vance noted he could have made the point more effectively and with more charity toward Americans who do not have children for reasons beyond their control. He added that the comment failed to respect the dignity of every life. Vance won election to the U.S. Senate in 2022 and took office in early 2023.
President Donald Trump selected him as running mate in 2024, and Vance became vice president in early 2025.
