Vickrum Digwa Jailed for Life for Stabbing Murder of Henry Nowak
The 23-year-old received a minimum term of 21 years after stabbing the 18-year-old to death in December 2025. Bodycam footage of the incident later triggered protests and political debate.
BBCVickrum Digwa, 23, was sentenced on Monday to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 21 years for the murder of Henry Nowak. Nowak, 18, was stabbed to death in December 2025. Henry Nowak's father, Mark, appealed for calm outside the court after the sentencing.

He said the family did not want his death used to create further division, hatred or tension, and wanted the story to make streets safer for everyone. Bodycam footage showing police officers handcuffing Nowak as he lay dying was released after the trial. Violent protests followed in Southampton, resulting in two arrests and injuries to 11 officers.
Digwa had claimed he was the victim of a racist attack. The Independent Office for Police Conduct is investigating the officers' conduct, and the National Police Chiefs Council guidance on race is under review. Sir Keir Starmer met Nowak's mother, father and stepmother in Downing Street on Thursday.
Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch also met the family the same day. Badenoch posted on X that the family had asked politicians to work across parties and religions to rebuild trust in the police. She wrote that trust had been broken and that religious practices or exemptions permitting weapons in public should be examined.
Elon Musk posted on X on Tuesday urging people to share the bodycam video. He wrote that mainstream media had remained silent on Nowak while covering George Floyd's death millions of times. George Floyd died of cardiac arrest after a police officer knelt on his neck while he was handcuffed.
Starmer, speaking in York on Thursday, accused Musk of interfering in UK politics and trying to whip up division. He said Britain was a reasonable, tolerant country and that the family had reacted calmly. Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey accused Musk of a coordinated campaign of foreign interference and of using his platform to incite violence on British streets.
At Prime Minister's Questions on Wednesday, Starmer accused Nigel Farage of exploiting Nowak's death. Farage had released a video on Tuesday calling for a response of "pure, cold rage" and later posted another video claiming white people were not treated fairly under the law. Rupert Lowe posted on X on Thursday telling supporters not to attack police and to stay calm.
