Victoria Mboko withdraws from Wimbledon with left knee MCL injury
The No. 9-ranked Canadian announced the injury Friday after retiring from her singles match at Queen’s Club. Serena Williams loses her doubles partner for the grass-court major.
Nbc SportsVictoria Mboko will miss Wimbledon after tearing the MCL in her left knee, the 19-year-old Canadian announced Friday. Mboko sustained the injury during her singles match against Karolina Pliskova at Queen’s Club on Wednesday. ” She lost the opening set 6-2, then retired while leading 4-3 in the second set and attempting to break Pliskova’s serve at deuce.
Mboko walked gingerly to her bench and covered her face with a towel before leaving the court. The WTA confirmed her ranking at No. 9 in the singles standings. Mboko is Serena Williams’ doubles partner.
The pair won their opening-round match at Queen’s Club in Williams’ first professional appearance in nearly four years. Williams, 44, had also scheduled doubles matches at the Berlin Open. The Queen’s Club doubles draw continues Thursday, but Mboko’s withdrawal ends the partnership for Wimbledon and leaves Williams without a partner for the grass-court major.
