The video captures the shooter walking into view with a backpack before positioning himself on the Pirámide de la Luna and opening fire.
Tourists are seen running for cover as gunshots are heard. Yazmin Salcedo, a tourist from Texas, said that shots rang out repeatedly and they ran without knowing the direction of the gunfire. Her husband, Joel Torres, recorded the incident on a 360-degree camera while the family was visiting the site with their son and daughter-in-law.
Torres stated that the gunman walked in front of them, sat down, and began shooting within less than a minute.
The gunman, identified as Julio César Jasso Ramírez, a 27-year-old Mexican national, climbed midway up the nearly 2,000-year-old Pirámide de la Luna, a structure historically used for ritual human sacrifice. He used a 1968 Smith & Wesson gun to fire at bystanders before turning the weapon on himself, according to Mexican authorities.
Authorities reported finding 58 rounds of unused ammunition on him. The attack killed a Canadian woman and wounded 13 others, including six Americans, three Colombians, one Russian, two Brazilians, and one Canadian. The wounded were taken to hospitals following the incident on Monday.
Torres noted that more people could have been killed given the opportunity the gunman had.
Torres were on vacation when the shooting occurred. Torres said they were thankful no more lives were lost. The footage, shared on X by @Mrgunsngear, depicts the gunman wearing a mask and preparing his weapon before the chaos ensued. Mexican authorities stated that Ramírez was obsessed with Hitler.
The incident took place at the Teotihuacan ruins, a major tourist attraction featuring ancient pyramids. No further details on the investigation were provided in the report.
