Vision screening program provides glasses to garment workers in Bangladesh

A workplace vision program has distributed corrective glasses to employees at selected garment factories in Bangladesh. Factory managers recorded higher daily output after workers began using the eyewear. Bangladesh ranks second globally in garment production behind China.

The industry employs approximately four million people across the country. Program organizers said the intervention addressed previously undiagnosed vision problems that slowed tasks such as stitching and quality inspection. Workers reported reduced eye strain and fewer headaches during shifts.

Program scope and reported results Factories participating in the program supplied data showing measurable increases in units completed per shift. The same data indicated fewer production errors linked to misreading labels or measurements. Organizers stated that the effort remains limited to a subset of factories and has not yet expanded industry-wide.
