Wales Midfielder Laura Hughes Leaves Melbourne City After Contract Ends

Wales midfielder Laura Hughes has left Melbourne City at the end of her contract. The Bbc reported that the 25-year-old is moving for a new opportunity overseas. Hughes made 69 appearances over three years at the club.
Melbourne City secured a domestic double in the 2025-26 season during her time there. Melbourne City director of football Michael Petrillo stated that Hughes became one of the leaders within the group, established herself among the competition's best midfielders, and earned the opportunity to take the next step in her career overseas.
Hughes was capped once by Australia in a friendly against Chinese Taipei in 2024.
She committed to Wales late in 2025 and made her debut in a friendly win over Switzerland in December 2025. After an injury lay-off, she made two substitute appearances in the final two games of Wales' Women's World Cup qualifying group phase in June 2026. "I want to thank everyone who has been a part of my journey at City and wish the club the best of luck for the future," Hughes said.
Hughes made her professional debut at age 15 for Canberra United, had a spell in Iceland, returned to Canberra, played briefly for Manly United, and then moved to Melbourne.
