The refurbishment includes new ride vehicles, updated track, and new show elements. Disney described the work as covering the attraction from mountain-top to cavern-deep to maintain its condition. The project aims to preserve the ride's classic feel while adding movement and detail.

The new show elements feature an expanded underground sequence with glowing natural caverns, including phosphorescent pools and shimmering stalactites and stalagmites known as the Rainbow Caverns.

Riders will pass through these areas during the ride. Disney noted that ominous sounds may emanate from deeper within the mountain. The ride's backstory involves a gold-mining operation that disturbs natural forces on Big Thunder Mountain, leading to a runaway mine train theme.
