The Washington Commanders are retiring the No. 44 jersey worn by Hall of Fame running back John Riggins, ESPN reported. Riggins becomes the seventh player in franchise history to receive the honor. Riggins played for Washington from 1976 to 1985.
He remains the franchise's all-time leading rusher with 7,742 yards and ranks second with 85 touchdowns. His 79 rushing touchdowns stand as the franchise record, 33 more than second-place Clinton Portis. In Super Bowl XVII on January 30, 1983, Riggins rushed for 166 yards and scored a 43-yard touchdown on fourth-and-1.
Washington defeated the Miami Dolphins 27-17, and Riggins was named MVP. During the 1982 four-game playoff run, he set an NFL postseason record with 610 rushing yards. In 1984, at age 35 years and three months, Riggins became the oldest player in NFL history to rush for more than 1,000 yards.
