WATERVILLE, Maine — Neil Wing, 39, was sentenced to 21 months in federal prison for attempting to transfer obscene material to a minor, the U.S. Department of Justice announced on May 14, 2026.

The sentence, imposed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Maine, also includes three years of supervised release after incarceration. Wing must register as a sex offender under federal law upon completion of his prison term.

The conviction stems from a single defendant's conduct and carries direct consequences for Wing alone. Federal sentencing guidelines for such offenses mandate prison time, post-release supervision, and lifetime sex-offender registration in many cases. The three-year supervised release term begins immediately after the 21-month prison sentence ends.

The sentence activates standard federal requirements that Wing report to a probation officer, submit to warrantless searches, and comply with restrictions on internet use and contact with minors during supervision. After release, he must update his residence and employment with law enforcement under the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Maine handled the prosecution.

This sentencing is the latest in routine enforcement actions by the Justice Department targeting the online distribution of prohibited material to minors. The department has pursued similar cases under 18 U.S.C. § 1470, which prohibits the transfer of obscene material to individuals under 16.
