Victor Wembanyama posted on X on July 10 that he intends to remain with the San Antonio Spurs. “Spurs family, I’m here to stay. Whatever it takes,” the 22-year-old wrote with a black heart emoji, nypost.com reported.
NBA insider Jake Fischer reported that Wembanyama is considering signing a rookie-scale extension below the maximum value. Wembanyama is eligible for a five-year, $251 million maximum deal this summer that could reach roughly $301 million with certain league honors. The lower figure would preserve salary-cap room for the Spurs.
San Antonio has already committed to De’Aaron Fox on a four-year extension worth approximately $229 million that begins in the 2026-27 season and runs through 2029-30. Fox is scheduled to earn about $55 million in 2027-28. The Spurs also have five other players, including Devin Vassell at around $27 million, under contracts of $10 million or more for next season.
Wembanyama appeared in Game 5 of the 2026 NBA Finals against the New York Knicks at Frost Bank Center on June 13. The Knicks allowed Mitchell Robinson to leave for Boston earlier this offseason in part because of second-apron salary restrictions that a reduced Wembanyama deal could help the Spurs avoid.
