White House Meets Anthropic CEO on AI Model Amid Security Concerns
White House officials held a productive meeting with Anthropic's CEO to discuss the company's new Mythos AI model, which excels in cybersecurity tasks. The talks follow tensions over government use of Anthropic's technology and a lawsuit against federal agencies. The model raises both opportunities for collaboration and risks related to hacking vulnerabilities.
crowdfundinsider.comWhite House officials met with Anthropic's CEO to address concerns surrounding the company's newly released Mythos AI model. The model demonstrates advanced capabilities in hacking and cybersecurity tasks. Multiple sources confirmed the meeting occurred on Friday and involved discussions on balancing innovation with safety.
The White House described the talks as productive and constructive, focusing on opportunities for collaboration and protocols to manage the technology's challenges. Anthropic has limited access to Mythos to a few dozen companies, emphasizing its potential to find bugs in old code.
Background of Tensions Tensions
between the administration and Anthropic escalated when federal agencies labeled the company a supply chain risk, leading to a lawsuit.
Anthropic argued the designation stemmed from its refusal to grant the Pentagon unfettered use of its AI tools over fears of being used for mass domestic surveillance and fully autonomous weapons. A federal court in California has largely agreed, but a federal appeals court has denied the firm's request to temporarily block the supply chain risk designation.
Nevertheless, Anthropic's tools are still in use at many of the government agencies that had been using them before the designation, according to court records.
The company has been involved in high-level government and military work since 2024.
Model Capabilities
and International Response Researchers
have noted Mythos as strikingly capable at computer security tasks, able to autonomously find ways to exploit vulnerabilities.
The United Kingdom's AI Security Institute evaluated the model and found it a step up over previous models, which were already rapidly improving. “Mythos Preview can exploit systems with weak security posture, and it is likely that more models with these capabilities will be developed,” the institute said in a report.
Anthropic has also been in talks with the European Union about its AI models, including advanced models that haven’t yet been released in Europe, according to a European Commission spokesman.
