Wildfire Outside La Bisbal d’Emporda Burns 2,200 Hectares, Prompts Evacuation of 150 People

Spanish firefighters have stabilized around 70 percent of the right flank of a wildfire that broke out Friday outside La Bisbal d’Emporda in northeastern Spain, according to the Catalonia regional fire service. The blaze has burned about 2,200 hectares of forest and prompted the evacuation of 150 people, including roughly 70 children, from a nearby holiday camp.

Hundreds of firefighters worked through the night to contain the fire, which threatens the Costa Brava coast.

The regional fire service said the immediate goal is to consolidate control before winds are forecast to shift at midday Saturday. No injuries have been reported from the incident. The fire service added that more than two thirds of the blaze is now under control.

Last year Spain recorded its highest wildfire damage on record, with nearly 400,000 hectares burned, according to the European Forest Fire Information System.
