Wolves agree to sell midfielder Joao Gomes to Aston Villa for £38 million

Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes is poised to join Aston Villa in a deal worth £38 million, bbc.co.uk reported. The Brazil international has left the club's training camp in Portugal and will have a medical on Thursday. The agreement carries an initial fee of £34 million plus £4 million in add-ons.
Aston Villa need midfield reinforcements after selling Youri Tielemans to Manchester United for £35 million. Amadou Onana is ruled out until next year with a serious knee injury he suffered with Belgium at the World Cup. The club is also close to completing the signing of Switzerland international Johan Manzambi from Freiburg for a club-record fee of over £50 million.
Atletico Madrid had been keen on Gomes but did not finalise a deal. Gomes made 41 appearances for Wolves last season as the team finished bottom of the Premier League. He played 130 times for the club and scored seven goals after joining from Flamengo in 2023, including his only goal of the previous campaign against Aston Villa.
