Woman Loses 35% of Tongue to Cancer After Six-Month Delay in Diagnosis

Rachel Passarella, 42, lost 35 percent of her tongue after a red spot on it turned out to be tongue cancer that doctors had dismissed as a canker sore for six months. The misdiagnosis ended only when a second dentist used a handheld oral screening device that the first doctors and dentists had skipped entirely. That device prompted further testing that confirmed cancer.

Oral cancer has one of the lowest early-detection rates of any major cancer. The delayed diagnosis in Passarella's case required surgery that removed 35 percent of her tongue.
