Women Report PMS Relief From Allergy and Heartburn Pill Combination

Terese Hansen of Omaha, Nebraska, said she experienced relief from four years of nausea, heartburn, erratic body temperature, edginess and exhaustion after taking an allergy medication and Pepcid AC. Npr reported that Hansen followed videos on TikTok claiming the combination eased premenstrual symptoms and that her children and boyfriend also noticed the change.

Hansen stated the improvement felt like a switch flipped from bad to good and that she had consulted her doctor before trying the over-the-counter drugs.

Npr reported similar accounts from other women, including some in perimenopause, who said the same combination reduced irritability and boosted energy. Leigh A. Frame, executive director of the Office of Integrative Medicine & Health at George Washington University, stated there have been no clinical trials testing the safety or efficacy of the combination.

Frame described the practice as an evidence-free zone and noted that histamine is linked to hormonal fluctuations, poor sleep and thyroid issues. Dr. Mara Rivera, an Austin-based psychiatrist, stated that estrogen stimulates histamine release while progesterone acts as a natural antihistamine.

Rivera said progesterone levels drop sharply before menstruation and that both hormones fluctuate rapidly in perimenopause, which could explain why histamine blockers might help some people. Dr. Tami Rowen, a gynecologist at the University of California, San Francisco, stated that patients can experience benefits from the placebo effect even when a medication has no direct pharmacological action.

Rowen added there is currently no clinical evidence that the combination treats PMDD or PMS. Frame said it might be reasonable for some people to try the medications temporarily while awaiting specialist care but urged consultation with a doctor first.
