An errant throw allowed the runner to reach second base. A subsequent two-run homer gave the Yankees the lead. Two walks followed before a three-run homer extended the margin to five runs.
Earlier scoring The Yankees took a 2-0 lead in the second inning.
A double and two singles produced the runs against the opposing starter. The Blue Jays tied the game with single runs in the third and fourth innings. An RBI single in the sixth gave the Yankees a brief 3-2 advantage. A game-tying home run in the bottom of the sixth evened the score again before the decisive ninth-inning rally.
