Yankees infielder says he will not wear protective cup after groin injury

New York Yankees second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. said Friday he does not plan to begin wearing a protective cup after being hit in the groin by a foul ball during Thursday's game. Chisholm described the pain as "a million" and noted he has never worn a cup, including during his minor-league career when equipment rules required it.

He said the decision rests on personal preference rather than team policy.

Injury and recovery The ball struck Chisholm in the fourth inning.

Trainers attended to him on the field for several minutes before he left for ice treatment. Boone said medical staff examined the player Friday morning and cleared him to remain in the lineup. Boone added that he had been confident enough in Chisholm's condition Thursday night to submit the original lineup card.

Equipment practices Chisholm said he views the cup primarily as a defensive safeguard and has not considered using one while batting. Boone noted that several current non-catchers also forgo the equipment, contrasting the practice with earlier generations of players. Chisholm joked that while he has borrowed bats from teammates this season, he will not borrow a protective cup.
