Yankees Outfielder Randal Grichuk Discusses Performance and Roster Situation

He emphasized maintaining a disciplined approach and hard contact despite inconsistent results. Grichuk stated that he prefers strong contact even if it results in outs over weak hits that fall in. Grichuk was signed late in camp as a right-handed hitter effective against left-handed pitchers.

However, the team faced few starting left-handers early in the season, with only San Francisco’s Robbie Ray in the first 11 games. This led to limited playing opportunities for Grichuk initially.

In limited playing time, Grichuk has recorded 2 hits in 20 at-bats, including a pair of doubles, one walk, and eight strikeouts. His hard-hit rate of 61.5 percent ranked 12th among 406 hitters with at least 10 plate appearances entering Monday. His barrel rate of 30.8 percent ranked third, ahead of teammate Aaron Judge's 27.5 percent.

Grichuk noted his strikeout rate of 36.4 percent and expressed the need to make more contact. He was not in the lineup Sunday against Kansas City’s Cole Ragans, a left-hander. Grichuk mentioned upcoming games against Boston southpaws as opportunities to improve.

Volpe, recovering from an injury, played last week with Double-A Somerset and is scheduled to play this week with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Volpe could return by this weekend, prompting a roster adjustment. Grichuk acknowledged this possibility and its impact on his position.

The team is considering options such as optioning J.C. Escarra, who has not hit well, though this depends on Ben Rice's readiness as backup catcher. Rice has not caught an inning this season but has participated in bullpen sessions and live batting practices.

Grichuk stated that he hopes his underlying metrics attract interest from other teams if needed.

He praised the environment, noting everything has been positive aside from traffic. Grichuk stated he does not want to leave and feels he is swinging well but needs to produce results.”
