Yankees' Volpe and reporter both say report of refusal to play second base was inaccurate

A report that New York Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe rebuffed a suggestion to work out at second base was later denied by Volpe and retracted by the reporter. ESPN reported that Volpe said he was caught off guard by the report and called it B.S. Michael Kay reported on his ESPN New York 880 radio show on July 7 that Volpe had rebuffed the Yankees suggestion to work out at second base during his minor league rehab assignment.
Kay stated on social media on July 8 that there is absolutely no truth to the report and said he was wrong. Volpe addressed the report before the Yankees game against the Tampa Bay Rays on July 9. He said the report could not be further from the truth and that he told manager Aaron Boone he would play catcher or any position needed when he was optioned.
Volpe has been working out at second base since Jose Caballero returned from the injured list but has played exclusively at shortstop. Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Volpe character and team-first attitude is beyond reproach. Volpe was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on May 3 and rejoined the Yankees nine days later.
Yankees general manager Brian Cashman told the New York Post that Volpe offered no resistance to trying out other positions.
