Young Washington Opens to $7.6 Million, Trails Animated Films in July 4 Weekend Projections

Young Washington collected $7.6 million in ticket sales on its first day in theaters, doubling the opening-day total of Supergirl and positioning the film for a $20-21 million weekend gross. The historical drama is expected to finish behind Minions, Monsters, and Toy Story 5 at the domestic box office for the July 4 holiday period.

Forbes reported the figures and noted that the results arrived without strong critical support.

Young Washington carries a 58 percent critics score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 94 percent audience score. The gap mirrors the reception of Sound of Freedom, another Angel Studios release that opened on July 4, 2023. Sound of Freedom earned a 57 percent critics rating and a 99 percent audience score based on more than 10,000 reviews.

It grossed $250 million worldwide, 73 percent of which came from domestic theaters, on a production budget of $14.5 million. Young Washington stars Andy Serkis, Kelsey Grammer, and Ben Kingsley, with William Franklyn-Miller in the lead role. Chris Pratt posted a viral social-media video urging viewers to see the film.

Angel Studios describes its output as values-based entertainment and previously produced the streaming series The Chosen. The company’s track record shows sustained audience interest in titles that receive lower marks from professional reviewers. A comparable pattern appeared recently with Citizen Vigilante, which holds a 7 percent critics score and a 94 percent audience score, indicating that audience approval can diverge sharply from critical consensus across multiple releases.
