Andrew Flintoff has been appointed Sydney Thunder men's head coach in Australia's Big Bash, marking his first overseas T20 league role. The 48-year-old has served as England Lions full-time coach since 2024. He will depart their South Africa tour early to begin the new position.

Flintoff signed a two-season deal and replaces the prior coach. The England and Wales Cricket Board approved the move, viewing it as a development opportunity. The Big Bash schedule remains unannounced. England Lions are scheduled to stay in South Africa until a four-day match on 18 December.

I can't wait to get over there and get started.

I'm looking at this with a lot of optimism.

This is a huge day in the history of Sydney Thunder, and the BBL more broadly. Thunder finished as runners-up in the previous season under captain David Warner. Flintoff previously coached Northern Superchargers in The Hundred for two seasons, achieving fourth- and third-place finishes before not being retained after a change in franchise ownership.
