Anthropic Launches New AI Agent Tools for Self-Management and Review at Developer Conference

Anthropic announced new tools allowing its AI agents to manage each other and to "dream," or review and learn from their previous work, at its annual developer conference in San Francisco the week of May 8, 2026. Hundreds of software engineers traveled to the city for the event hosted by the frontier AI lab.

The company pitched the new agent tools to developers as a way to build increasingly complex systems.

Anthropic compared its new agent tools to how the creation of Excel spreadsheets led to a boom in the accounting profession. Semafor reported that the tools were positioned as enabling greater capability rather than simply replacing existing work. The recent spate of tech layoffs tied to AI improvements instilled more fear than enthusiasm in many of the developers at the conference.

One developer said he is even encouraging his son, who recently started college with a major in computer science, to minor in philosophy as a backup if the whole CS thing doesn’t work out. Social media influencers attended Anthropic’s developer conference in growing numbers.

The company met the moment by tapping Claude to write poems for each guest based on what they looked like, alongside offerings of tequila and orange liqueur.

Semafor reported that optics appear to be increasingly important to Anthropic as it attempts to sell to a broader audience. The approach risks alienating its most loyal user base if it leans too much toward trendsetting, according to the report.

The gathering drew both cutting-edge coders focused on the future of their roles and a newer cohort of influencers drawn to the AI space.
