Argentina Beats England 2-1 in World Cup Semifinal

Argentina defeated England 2-1 in the World Cup semifinal at Atlanta Stadium on Wednesday after trailing at halftime. Lionel Messi set up Enzo Fernández for a long-range equalizer and then delivered the cross that Lautaro Martínez headed in during stoppage time. Anthony Gordon had given England the lead early in the second half.

Messi said the victory carried extra weight because of the rivalry with England. "The fans wanted this victory more than any other, because of what it means to face England in a semifinal and reach another World Cup final," he said. Martínez entered in the 81st minute and scored the winner four minutes into stoppage time. "We pulled off a very difficult victory," Martínez said after the match.

After the final whistle, Argentina players displayed a banner reading "Las Malvinas son Argentinas." FIFA has not responded to questions about possible disciplinary action for the political message.

Argentina will face Spain on Sunday.

Spain has conceded only one goal in seven tournament matches. Martínez said the team would rest and prepare while also enjoying the achievement of reaching a second consecutive final.
