Army National Guard NCO earns runner-up in 2026 Region IV Best Warrior Competition

CAMP ATTERBURY, Indiana — Staff Sgt. Christian M. Johnson of the Indiana Army National Guard finished as runner-up in the noncommissioned officer category of the Region IV Best Warrior Competition, according to a U.S. Department of Defense video release dated May 7, 2026.

The competition drew participants from National Guard units across Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin. Johnson competed against NCOs from those six states in events testing physical fitness, marksmanship, land navigation, combat lifesaver skills, and military knowledge.

The winner and runner-up in each category advance to represent Region IV at the Army National Guard Best Warrior Competition, which determines the top soldier and NCO across all 54 states and territories.

Johnson’s second-place finish changes his immediate assignment status from regional competitor to national finalist. The national event is scheduled for later in 2026 at a location and exact date to be announced by the National Guard Bureau. Prior to this competition, Johnson held standard drilling status with his Indiana unit; the runner-up designation now places him on a specialized preparation track that includes additional training support and temporary duty assignments.

The outcome triggers several downstream requirements. Johnson must complete post-competition interviews and after-action reviews that feed into National Guard training doctrine updates. His unit gains priority access to advanced preparation resources allocated for national competitors.

The National Guard Bureau will incorporate performance data from this event into its annual readiness reporting to Congress, which in turn informs fiscal year 2027 budget requests for warrior training programs that serve approximately 336,000 Army National Guard members.

This marks the second year the Region IV competition has been held at Camp Atterbury. The 2025 event followed the same format and fed directly into the national competition that concluded in October 2025. The Army National Guard has conducted the Best Warrior program annually since 2002 to identify top performers and recognize standards across its force.
