Axiom Space Releases Liquid Cooling Garment Design for Use Under AxEMU Spacesuit on Artemis IV

Axiom Space revealed the Liquid Cooling and Ventilation Garment that astronauts will wear under the AxEMU spacesuit during the Artemis IV mission. The garment is the base layer designed to keep crew members cool and comfortable inside the suit and during spacewalks. Cold water circulates through embedded tubes to remove heat from astronauts’ bodies.

The garment also contains a backup cooling system, a feature absent from older suits. The LCVG houses the ventilation system that supplies fresh oxygen to the AxEMU helmet. Exhaled carbon dioxide is directed to a scrubber for recirculation.

The Verge reported the announcement on June 7, 2026. Artemis IV is scheduled to return humans to the Moon in 2028. Axiom Space previously collaborated with Prada on the design of the AxEMU spacesuit itself.

The new garment continues that partnership between the company and the Italian fashion house. NASA has previously funded other projects that combined high-tech materials with design input from outside traditional aerospace firms. One example is the BioSuit concept developed by MIT professor Dava Newman with architect Guillermo Trotti.
