The Bayeux Tapestry was removed from its crate at the British Museum in London after its transfer from France. Le Monde reported that staff will begin a thorough condition check on Monday, July 20, 2026, and will place the artifact in a custom-made display case a few days later. French Culture Minister Catherine Pégard attended the unveiling on July 17.
On the same day three meters of the tapestry showing the meeting between William the Conqueror and Harold Godwinson were briefly visible before restorers covered the embroidery with fabric to protect it from light and dust. British Museum chair Lord George Osborne said the arrival had been front-page news in British papers and called the moment historic.
Pégard said the event marked a shift from a cordial agreement to a friendly one between the two countries.
