Ben Simmons Ramps Up Training for NBA Return After Year Away

Ben Simmons is increasing his training workload as he prepares for a possible return to the NBA. The 29-year-old forward last played for the LA Clippers during the 2024-25 season and did not appear in any games last year.

Simmons told Men's Health he needed the time away to "find himself again" and hopes to demonstrate improved physical condition to interested teams. "I plan on getting as strong as I can physically, getting my ass on the court, and then the team realizing that my abilities will be needed," Simmons said in comments published Monday.

He added that he has spoken with coaches who indicated he could resume playing if he reaches full health.

Simmons was selected first overall in the 2016 NBA draft and earned three All-Star selections along with the 2017-18 Rookie of the Year award. Injuries and a holdout limited his availability in prior seasons. He averaged 2.9 points, 3.8 rebounds and 3.1 assists across 18 games with the Clippers in 2024-25.

"I think this is just what I'm choosing to do, like, no one's forcing me," Simmons said. "It's never been about, do I love playing basketball? " He mentioned the possibility of returning to Philadelphia and expressed interest in organizations with strong cultures.
