Berlin-Based M-Appeal Acquires International Sales Rights to 'Downtown' Ahead of Cannes Launch
M-Appeal has secured international sales rights for the Dutch film 'Downtown,' directed by Michiel van Erp. The film, set in 1980s Amsterdam, will be launched at the Cannes Film Market in May 2026, marking the second collaboration between M-Appeal and Kaap Holland Film.
VarietyBerlin-based international sales company M-Appeal has acquired the international sales rights to the film 'Downtown,' Variety reported. The company plans to launch the film at the Cannes Film Market in May 2026. 'Downtown' is directed by Dutch filmmaker Michiel van Erp and is set in the 1980s at the Downtown nightclub in Amsterdam.
The script was written by Frank Houtappels. The film features actors Yorick van Wageningen, Hans Kesting, and Roeland Fernhout. " He added that the film also explores themes of loss and personal growth, saying, "The community I found myself in as a young twenty-something was overwhelming.
I made friends for life, and together we could take on the world. But the film is also about the loss of your innocence and the loss of friends. By placing the story in the present as well, it gains a different perspective.
It is important to know your history, if only to share the pain and look to the future together. " Maren Kroymann, managing director of M-Appeal, highlighted the film's emotional and visual qualities, stating, "The film’s visual and emotional richness, combined with Michiel van Erp’s ability to capture a universal sense of nostalgia, allows ‘Downtown’ to resonate with audiences worldwide.
" 'Downtown' is produced by Maarten Swart of Kaap Holland Film, alongside Michiel van Erp and Monique Busman of Het Familiedrama.
Busman and Swart said, "The story is told with great power. It’s brilliant to see how Van Erp brings the vibrant nightlife of the 1980s to life on the big screen. " The film is a co-production involving Eyeworks Film & TV and BNNVARA and has received support from the Netherlands Film Fund, the Netherlands Production Incentive, CoBo Fund, the Flanders Audiovisual Fund (VAF), and the Tax Shelter of the Belgian Federal Government.
This project marks the second partnership between M-Appeal and Kaap Holland Film. 'Downtown' is Michiel van Erp’s fourth feature film.
