The authority announced measures on Thursday after false starts at the Cheltenham festival rose from 18% in 2022 to nearly 40% in 2026. Proposals include layout adjustments, audio recording and stricter starting rules.
news.sky.comThe British Horseracing Authority announced on Thursday a series of measures to address false starts at the Cheltenham festival. The percentage of festival races with a false start rose from 18% in 2022 to nearly 40% at the 2026 meeting, The Guardian reported. The overall rate of false starts in British jump racing stood at around 4% over the same five-year period.
A review of the 2026 festival identified particular problems at starts for races over two and two-and-a-half miles, which begin near a bend. The authority proposed changes to the physical track layout at those starts to reduce field congestion and acceleration.
Additional measures include a live audio recording system at the start to capture starter instructions for the stewards’ room, a physical and highly visible start zone at all British jumps tracks, and an amendment to the rule on approaching the tapes.
Riders will be required to approach at walking pace only, with the change taking effect from the start of the core jumps season in October. The authority also plans a tiered penalty structure for jockeys breaching starting rules before Class One or Class Two races.
Cathy O’Meara, head of raceday officials at the BHA, said the changes are hoped to improve starts at the festival and across jump racing.
“But they are not a golden bullet,” O’Meara stated. ” The proposed changes remain recommendations pending further stakeholder discussions and possible trial periods. Negotiations with the Professional Jockeys’ Association over increased penalties could be extensive.
