Bystander Remains Stable After White House Checkpoint Shooting
A 21-year-old gunman was fatally shot by Secret Service agents at a Pennsylvania Avenue checkpoint. An unidentified bystander was wounded and is in serious but stable condition after surgery.
rediff.comA bystander wounded during an exchange of gunfire at a White House security checkpoint remained in serious but stable condition on Memorial Day. m. on Saturday at the intersection of Pennsylvania Avenue and 17th Street NW. The Metropolitan Police Department is investigating to determine who shot the bystander, who underwent surgery, and how many bullets were fired.
The gunman, identified as 21-year-old Nasire Best of Dundalk, Maryland, was fatally shot by Secret Service agents.
The exchange of gunfire occurred when Best began shooting toward the checkpoint. Witnesses reported hearing what sounded like dozens of shots during the confrontation. No law enforcement officers were wounded or injured in the incident. The bystander has not been publicly identified.
“Our thoughts are also with the innocent bystander who was wounded during this incident,” said Secret Service Director Sean Curran. ” The Metropolitan Police Department continues to lead the investigation into the sequence of events and the source of the bystander’s injuries.
