Cape Verde's national soccer team lost 3-2 to Argentina in extra time during a round of 32 match on July 3, ending its debut run at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. @ABC reported that the result came after Cape Verde finished the group stage with three draws and one loss. The team opened group play with a 0-0 draw against Spain.
It followed with a 2-2 draw against Uruguay and a 0-0 draw against Saudi Arabia, results that secured advancement to the knockout stage despite zero wins. @ABC reported the group record stood at 0-1-3. Argentina forward Lionel Messi said after the match that Cape Verde pressed effectively and that the contest proved difficult.
"Some people thought the match was going to be straightforward, but that couldn’t have been further from reality," Messi stated. " Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha and coach Bubista addressed the squad after elimination. Vozinha said the team needed rest while expressing pride in its performance.
Bubista thanked the players for their effort and heart on the field. Dozens of fans cheered the team in the lobby of its Miami hotel upon its return around July 4. @ABC reported that Bubista shook his fist in celebration while Vozinha shook hands and posed for photos with supporters.
