Chicago Cubs defeat San Francisco Giants 5-1

Michael Busch hit a three-run homer and Javier Assad pitched six innings as the Chicago Cubs beat the San Francisco Giants 5-1 on Friday night to open a three-game series. The Cubs took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning on an RBI double by Seiya Suzuki and a sacrifice fly by Nico Hoerner. Busch's homer, his eighth of the season, came in the fifth inning after a double by Alex Bregman.

Pitching performances Assad allowed three singles, walked one and struck out five over six innings in his second start since returning from Triple-A Iowa. Hoby Milner threw a scoreless seventh inning and Trent Thornton allowed a solo homer to Bryce Eldridge in the ninth. Landen Roupp gave up four runs on four hits in 4 2/3 innings for the Giants. He walked two and struck out five.

Offensive details Suzuki finished with two doubles for Chicago.

Five of the Cubs' six hits were extra-base hits. Eldridge had three of the Giants' four hits. The Giants have lost six of their last seven home games. Chicago lost two of three games against San Francisco last week.
