The Chicago Cubs left-hander said his knee popped while lowering himself to the floor to play with his son. He had already been placed on the injured list earlier this season with a biceps strain and then a knee issue. " He said he was squatting down when the knee gave out without immediate pain, and he could not put weight on the leg or straighten it afterward.

The pitcher had agreed to a $29 million, two-year contract with the Cubs in December 2024. In 2025 he recorded 14 wins and an earned-run average of 3.21 over 31 starts, earned his first All-Star selection, and helped the team reach the postseason. The Associated Press reported that the knee began bothering him while he played with his children at home.

The pitcher added that he likely had a torn meniscus for some time and stated that his children were not responsible.

The left-hander has started more than 200 games and pitched more than 1,100 innings across 12 major-league seasons. The Cubs are awaiting his return to the rotation after he opened the current season on the active roster.
