The Kansas City Chiefs will begin training camp later this month with an open competition at cornerback. Six players are competing for the three starting positions on defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo's unit. The players bring different profiles.
They include the team's top draft selection, a second-year player, a former champion returning after two seasons away, a veteran seeking to regain form, the longest-tenured member of the group, and a fourth-round rookie. The competition follows the departure of two former starters.
The Chiefs traded one player to the Los Angeles Rams before free agency and saw the other join the Rams as a free agent.
Draft and roster moves The Chiefs selected Mansoor Delane sixth overall after trading up three spots. They also drafted Jadon Canady in the fourth round. Kansas City signed L'Jarius Sneed to a one-year contract in June. Delane recorded two interceptions and 13 pass breakups in 11 games at LSU last season.
He did not allow a touchdown in coverage and was named a unanimous All-American. Spagnuolo said in May that Delane stood out on tape and was viewed as the top corner in the draft class. Delane said he takes pride in the mental side of the game and studies alignments to gain an advantage before plays develop.
Nohl Williams said the room must step up after the departures of the previous starters. He added that he is ready for the challenge and expects significant expectations from the coaching staff.
