China Sends Vice President to Greet President Trump in Beijing
President Trump arrived in Beijing on Wednesday and was greeted by Chinese Vice President Han Zheng along with ambassadors and senior foreign affairs officials. The reception marked an upgrade from Trump's 2017 visit when he was greeted by a lower-ranking official. Trump arrived with a delegation of U.S. business leaders for talks expected to cover trade, fentanyl and other issues.
New York PostPresident Trump arrived in Beijing on Wednesday without a tarmac greeting from Chinese President Xi Jinping. He was instead received by Chinese Vice President Han Zheng along with both ambassadors and senior foreign affairs officials. The reception represented an upgrade from the welcome Trump received during his 2017 visit to China.
In 2017 Trump was greeted by Yang Jiechi, who held the position of senior official and state councilor but not vice president. "It's actually quite revealing from a protocol perspective," said Isabelle Vladoiu, founder of the US Institute of Diplomacy and Human Rights.
" Vladoiu, who has worked with many international organizations and authored the book "Business Etiquette Secrets," said rank in Chinese diplomatic protocol is never accidental. She stated that China is signaling this visit carries greater strategic and geopolitical weight than the previous one.
Trump arrived aboard Air Force One with an entourage that included Elon Musk, the world's richest man and CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, whose AI chip-making business is the world's largest company by market capitalization. The welcome ceremony featured a military band and honor guard as well as 300 youths singing a welcome message and waving American and Chinese flags in time to the band's music.
Trump greeted the crowd with fist pumps. Body language expert Dr. Lillian Glass said Trump appeared emotional and visibly moved by the spectacle.
Trump said before departing Washington that he expects talks with Xi to focus on trade relations. Other topics expected to be discussed include ending illicit fentanyl exports to the U.S. and the American war with Iran, though Trump on Tuesday downplayed plans to discuss the conflict. Chinese President Xi Jinping did not attend the welcome ceremony.
