Discord bug led to more than 8,000 mistaken account bans since May

A bug in Discord's safety system caused the platform to ban more than 8,000 accounts since May for posting images containing grids. The affected images included chessboards, game textures, and Minecraft inventories. The platform's automated system is designed to flag content by matching it against known harmful material.

How the error occurred Instead of temporarily restricting uploads during review, the glitch resulted in full account bans. When staff cleared the accounts, the same bug prevented automatic removal of the bans. Stanislav Vishnevskiy, Discord cofounder and chief technology officer, stated that the bug impacted around 200 users who posted grid-like pictures and about 8,000 people who posted other benign images.

Resolution and response "Everyone affected has now been unbanned," Vishnevskiy said. The company posted an explanation on X detailing the false-positive issue and the steps taken to correct it.
