Donovan Mitchell Agrees to Four-Year $273 Million Extension with Cavaliers

Donovan Mitchell agreed to a four-year, $273 million maximum contract extension with the Cleveland Cavaliers on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, ESPN reported. The deal includes a player option for the 2030-31 season and a full trade kicker. Mitchell reached the agreement on the first day he was eligible for an extension.

He could have waited until next summer for a five-year, $353 million deal. The new contract replaces the final guaranteed season of his prior agreement ahead of a 2027 player option. Mitchell, 29, has been an All-Star in each of his four seasons with Cleveland since arriving in a 2022 trade from the Utah Jazz.

He has earned All-NBA honors three times, including first-team selection in 2025. Mitchell has averaged 26.7 points, 5.3 assists and 4.6 rebounds per game with the Cavaliers while leading the team to the playoffs each season. In the 2025-26 regular season Mitchell averaged 27.9 points, 5.7 assists and 4.5 rebounds.

He averaged 26 points in the playoffs as the Cavaliers reached the Eastern Conference finals for the first time since 2018. The extension is the fourth-largest contract in NBA history by total value and carries an average annual value of just over $68 million, an NBA record. The agreement marks Mitchell's second extension since joining the Cavaliers.

Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert and president of basketball operations Koby Altman spoke with Mitchell and his agent once the extension became available and reached terms quickly.
