An intense heatwave has gripped the eastern United States since July 1, with daytime highs nearing 40°C in New York, Philadelphia and Washington DC on Thursday and Friday. Boston recorded 38°C. Central Park in Manhattan hit 38°C on Thursday, the highest reading there since 2012, while the overnight low remained 29°C.
Humidity pushed the heat index close to 43°C in parts of New York. Le Monde reported that the conditions produced widespread power outages and forced organizers to delay the start of Independence Day celebrations. Temperatures are forecast to stay extremely high through the July 4-5 weekend.
In 2023, 90 percent of New York households had air-conditioning units, though coverage varied from 93 percent in Manhattan to 87.7 percent in the Bronx. Le Monde reported that roughly 500,000 households forgo using their units because of high electricity prices.
