Escondido Man Hospitalized After Assault, Suspect in Custody

An elderly Escondido man was taken to a hospital with serious injuries after a confrontation on Buchanan Street near E. m. Wednesday. Escondido police Lt. Robert Craig said officers responded to a report of an assault. The victim has been identified as 69-year-old Kerry Sheron, an Army veteran who lives on the street.

Sheron's wife, Maria, told The California Post that her husband remains in critical condition and is not expected to survive. S. flags and pro-Trump banners at his home.

Police located and arrested 32-year-old Thomas Caleb Butler near East Mission Avenue and Begonia Street. Butler, a Navy veteran and Escondido resident, was taken into custody without incident. Butler has been charged with attempted murder. A family friend told The California Post that Butler has severe PTSD and was medicated for mental illness.

Police said the attack had no apparent political motive and are continuing to interview witnesses. Officers also noted that a bystander who intervened was injured during the incident. It remains unclear what prompted the confrontation, and authorities have not released further details.
