FIFA will allow spectators to carry one factory-sealed 590ml soft-plastic disposable water bottle into every match of the 2026 World Cup in the United States and Canada. The governing body announced the updated rule after reversing an earlier decision that had banned reusable bottles. Ticket holders had previously been allowed an empty transparent reusable bottle of up to one litre.

An update earlier this week removed that permission. All fans will be permitted to bring in one soft plastic 20 ounces (590ml) factory-sealed disposable water bottle into any FIFA World Cup 2026 match in the USA and Canada. World Cup 2026 chief operating officer Heimo Schirgi stated that hard-sided resealable water containers are not allowed because they could pose a safety and security risk.

Fans attending last summer’s Club World Cup in the United States had been permitted to bring empty bottles in with them. 50. Temperatures soared during last year's Club World Cup.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer criticised the earlier policy in an interview with LBC on Friday. “It’s just wrong,” he said. Starmer added that fans would still be able to purchase water inside the venues at higher prices.

“So you can’t bring plastic bottles in but you can buy a bottle of water when you get in the crowd? And then it’ll be expensive,” he said. He also noted that ticket prices are already high. “The tickets themselves cost a fortune, far too expensive in my view,” Starmer said.

The tournament will use 16 stadiums across North America.
