Four Artists Shortlisted for 2026 Turner Prize

chair Alex Farquharson stated that the shortlisted works offer a compelling reflection of the breadth and vitality of contemporary British art. The four artists are Simeon Barclay, Kira Freije, Marguerite Humeau, and Tanoa Sasraku. Their works will be displayed at the Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art later this year, with the winner announced on 10 December.

The Turner Prize, established in 1984, is awarded annually to a British artist for an outstanding exhibition or presentation of their work. It is named after painter JMW Turner and aims to promote public debate on developments in contemporary British art.

Each shortlisted artist receives £10,000, and the winner gets an additional £25,000.

Barclay's work, titled The Ruin, is an hour-long spoken-word performance drawing on his upbringing in Huddersfield and experiences in northern England's industrial landscape, accompanied by live percussion and horn sounds. The jury described it as an exploration of Britishness, class, race, and masculine identity through experimental language and an immersive soundscape.

Kira Freije's Unspeak the Chorus consists of sculptures made from metal, fabric, and found materials that depict universal human emotions, including stonecast faces and life-size figures from bare metal armatures. The jury noted the emotional depth and the haunting, expressive arrangement of figures in the space.

Marguerite Humeau's Torches features sculptures referencing natural species and imagined future worlds, accompanied by cycles of light and sound to examine earth's history and ecological themes. The jury highlighted its engagement with ecological and existential themes through inventive forms and speculative scenarios.

Tanoa Sasraku's Morale Patch is an installation of object-like sculptures focusing on geopolitical ideas and the political and military histories of oil, presented in a clinical, minimalist display. The jury praised its precision in addressing historical issues with contemporary resonance, conveying irony and seriousness.

Context Farquharson added that the selection presents a rich and diverse range of work offering distinct perspectives on the world. The prize has previously recognized various art forms, including a spoken-word work that won in 2019.
