Fourth Arrest in Arson Attack on Jewish Ambulances in London

Metropolitan Police announced the arrest of a 19-year-old man on Saturday in connection with an arson attack on ambulances operated by Hatzola, a volunteer-led service in north-west London. The man was arrested at Westminster Magistrates Court while three other suspects were appearing for charges.

This brings the total number of individuals in custody to four, with the attack occurring on March 23.

The three previously charged suspects are Hamza Iqbal, 20, and Rehan Khan, 19, both British nationals from Leyton, and a 17-year-old boy who is a dual British and Pakistani national from Walthamstow. All three were charged with arson with intent to damage property and being reckless as to whether life would be endangered. They did not enter pleas and were remanded in custody during the hearing.

The arson attack targeted four ambulances parked in the Golders Green area, causing gas canisters inside the vehicles to explode. The incident took place in the early hours of March 23, and authorities have described it as a premeditated event based on evidence presented in court.

Hatzola provides emergency medical services to the local community, including areas with significant Jewish populations.

Counter-terrorism police are leading the investigation, but the Metropolitan Police has stated that the incident has not been declared as terrorism. The Guardian reported that there is an ongoing inquiry into possible involvement of an Iranian-backed group, though this remains unconfirmed.

Cmdr Helen Flanagan, head of counter-terrorism policing in London, noted that the investigation has progressed to charging three individuals and emphasized continued collaboration with local communities.

In response to the attack, police have increased patrols in areas with large Jewish populations to enhance security. Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the event as a deeply shocking antisemitic arson attack, highlighting its impact on the community. Those affected include volunteers from Hatzola and local residents who rely on the service for emergency care.
