Train Driver Shaun Burton, 60, Dies in Bedford Collision

Shaun Burton, 60, died after the East Midlands Railway train he was driving collided with another London-bound service near Bedford on Friday afternoon. The crash occurred at 17:15 BST just south of Elstow. The two trains involved were the 16:40 service from Corby and the 15:50 service from Nottingham.

One hundred people were injured in the collision.

Eleven suffered very serious injuries, 32 had serious injuries, and 57 sustained minor injuries, according to the East of England Ambulance Service. Twenty-eight passengers remained in hospital as of Saturday morning, with nine listed in critical condition.

Burton's family said in a statement released by British Transport Police: "We are devastated by his loss. " Dave Calfe, general secretary of the train drivers' union Aslef, described Burton as having joined the railway relatively late in life after working on buses and coaches.

The Rail Accident Investigation Branch is working with British Transport Police to determine the cause and said it will provide a further update in the coming days. Engineers have begun building a temporary access road to allow two 110-tonne rail-mounted cranes to remove the damaged trains.

The overhead power lines must first be dismantled before the trains can be lifted from the site.
