Burton's family said in a statement released by British Transport Police: "We are devastated by his loss. " Dave Calfe, general secretary of the train drivers' union Aslef, described Burton as having joined the railway relatively late in life after working on buses and coaches.
The Rail Accident Investigation Branch is working with British Transport Police to determine the cause and said it will provide a further update in the coming days. Engineers have begun building a temporary access road to allow two 110-tonne rail-mounted cranes to remove the damaged trains.
The overhead power lines must first be dismantled before the trains can be lifted from the site.
