Fujimori Wins Peru Presidency by 49,000 Votes After Overseas Ballots Decide Outcome

Keiko Fujimori was elected president of Peru on June 7, 2026, after receiving 50.13 percent of the vote to 49.87 percent for Roberto Sanchez, Le Monde reported. The margin amounted to just over 49,000 votes. Peruvian expatriates supplied the entire difference.

Excluding ballots cast abroad, Sanchez would have led by 32,000 votes. More than 3.5 million Peruvians live outside the country, mainly in the United States, Spain and Argentina. About 1.2 million were registered to vote, 27 percent of them participated, and 63.2 percent of those who voted supported Fujimori.
