German prosecutors announced the arrest of a German-Rwandan national suspected of complicity in murders during the 1994 Rwanda genocide. The man, identified only as Innocent S. under German privacy rules, was arrested in the central state of Hesse.
He is accused of giving orders for the deaths of 25 Tutsis on five separate occasions while serving as assistant to the mayor of Kayove in northwestern Rwanda, AllAfrica reported. Prosecutors also say he had death lists drawn up and incited the killing of Tutsis in the town.
Innocent S. Is accused of personally stabbing one victim in the chest with a knife. Germany has prosecuted several suspects linked to the genocide under the principle of universal jurisdiction. The 1994 Rwanda genocide resulted in the systematic massacre of more than 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus by Hutu extremists.
The killings began in April 1994 after a months-long hate campaign backed by the government and lasted 100 days until the Rwandan Patriotic Front defeated the Hutu extremist government in July.
