Pettis has 27 years of coaching experience, including 22 in the major leagues. His most recent assignment was as the Houston Astros third base coach from 2015 to 2024. The 68-year-old native of Oakland, California, was the Texas Rangers first base coach from 2007 to 2012 and third base coach from 2013 to 2014.
He also served as a first base coach with the Chicago White Sox from 2001 to 2002 and the New York Mets from 2003 to 2004. Pettis coached on World Series-winning teams with Houston in 2017 and 2022. He was a five-time Gold Glove outfielder during a playing career that included stints with the California Angels from 1982 to 1987, the Detroit Tigers in 1988-89 and 1992, the Texas Rangers from 1990 to 1991, and the San Diego Padres in 1992.
Hector Borg was named San Francisco's third base coach before the season. Ron Wotus, a special assistant to baseball operations, has been serving as third base coach on an interim basis.
